The "Modern Classrooms Project" model is a Research-based, Blended Classroom, Self-Paced, and Mastery-Based instructional model. In this model, students work through lessons within a unit at their own pace. They will generally watch an instructional video (created by me) that teaches them a concept and then they have the opportunity to practice the new concept and apply it to their learning. Finally, they will perform a Mastery Check in which they share what they learned and show that they have "mastered" the concept. Once they master a concept, they can move onto the next lesson, even if the rest of the class is not ready to move on. Throughout the learning process, students have multiple opportunities to work with peers and the teacher in a one-to-one setting. With this model, the teacher is not spending their time "lecturing" or leading whole class instruction (for the entire period) at the front of the classroom but, instead, is working with students individually and in small groups throughout the day.
This model allows students who learn concepts more easily and are focused and driven, to move more quickly through the lessons without having to wait for their peers. At the same time, if students are having a hard time with certain concepts, they are given more time to work through those concepts by working with peers or the teacher so that they can gain a better understanding of the material. Additionally, if students are unable to attend class on a particular day, they are able to access everything they need through the Learning Management System (LMS). Our LMS is Schoology.
Please take a look at the Edutopia videos below to learn more about this model. My classroom is run slightly differently than the ones on the videos since I am using the model in all subjects at the elementary level but the basic elements that are shared in the videos also exist in my classroom.
